What Fun, What Success!

Mar 07, 2011

 KIDS International Development Society FUNDRAISER

Friday night we had a wonderfully generous turnout to Pauline Haarer School to hear Gerry Barnum and The DADs play some great music. Children roared around the gym while the adults talked and danced. Everyone seemed to enjoy the food and music. The band got us grooving by the end of the night when we pushed the chairs and table away and took over the dance floor. It seems that professional musicians, like these fathers from the school, are as flexible and talented as they are generous with their time. Thanks for the music go to Gerry Barnum and to the DADs;Phil Wipper on drums, Pierre Komen on vocals and Sax, Oz Zitek on Sax and Brian Kehoe and Carl on bass.

Rick and Adrianne from the KIDS International Development Society wrote from Cambodia to ask for help to fund an emergency food program at a school, called Kauk Chrey, where animals had destroyed the vegetable garden intended to feed the children for the next months before the rice harvest. If we could cover the $700 needed to feed at least 60 children for three months they would be very grateful. Our little gathering, enjoyed by one and all, has been able to raise (with a little help from other fundraising efforts) a total of $1400. At 12.5 cents per meal for a single child to have rice, vegtables and fish we figure that is 11,200 meals for kids.

Businesses in the Nanaimo community made this donation possible and we would like to acknowledgeTomo Sushi on Bowen Road, Mambo’s Pizza, Thirsty Camel Restaurant, New York Style Pizza, Old City Organics, McLean’s, The Green Store, Diana’s Garden Centre, Thrifty Foods at Port Place Mall, Quality Foods at University Centre for the donations of food and supplies and Harbour City Music for the use of their PA equipment. Thanks again to Michael Lundine, principal at Ecole Pauline Harrer,  for the support and technical assistance. Thanks to Robyn Kemp, KIDS Board Member, Alice Dugdale, Josephine Kenchenten for the DADs band logo, Ken for cleaning up after that wild party and all the Moms and Dads and Kids who helped bring this event together.

What a party! Gerry says we should do it again, outside in the summer. Sounds good to me.
