Health Tips - Living and Aging Well - Dr. Claire Craig

Jul 21, 2014

Living and Aging Well

Recently someone asked for my opinion on the top three things a person could do to improve health and wellness as they age.  The recommendations were geared towards individuals that are challenged by stress, inactivity and often poor dietary choices due to occupation, but those are similar obstacles that many of us face.  These suggestions are quite common sense, but foundational in providing a base of health, to prevent illness and encourage wellness at any age.

1) Eat more healthfully! Three easy basic rules are:

  •  Avoid anything white (except fennel and cauliflower!) - this mostly refers to processed foods and refined sugars
  •  Veggies should be half your plate, or half of what you eat over the course of a day
  •  Enjoy a whole foods diet, meaning real food  - a good example is that you can pick an apple off a tree, but not a chocolate cake!

2) Exercise!

  •  Our bodies were made to move, so find activities that you love and that make you sweat, and do them frequently
  • Form habits and don’t consider exercise the “extra” that can fall to the wayside when you get busy – remember that it helps your body deal with stress

3) Address stress!

  • Control what you can, and find techniques to connect to your calmer self
  • Basic suggestions are yoga, meditation, deep breathing, long walks, tai qi, acupuncture, and time spent in nature

The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, nor to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly
