One of the easiest and most cost-effective modalities available to us for home treatment is hydrotherapy.  Hydrotherapy is the application of water in any form, externally or internally, in the treatment of disease and the maintenance of health.  Yes, water hydrates and flushes out toxins, but there are many other ways to use what flows out of the tap to treat yourself and your family at home.  Here are just a few examples.

 

  • Epsom salt baths: Epsom salts, which contain Magnesium sulfate, are very helpful in assisting healing and reducing inflammation after minor muscle trauma, and recommended post-massage and acupuncture to reduce soreness.
     
  • Other things which can be added to the bathtub for relaxation are essential oils, such as Lavender to improve mood, Rosemary for clarity and to alleviate headaches, and Thyme to relieve congestion.
     
  • For skin itch, as in eczema or other dermatitis, oats can be put in the tub in a cheesecloth bag, and work wonders to relieve the itch.  This can prevent little ones from scratching and causing secondary infections.
     
  • Medicinal herbs can also be added to the tub for their therapeutic value.  This is an especially useful way to treat young children.  A good rule of thumb is 10 mins to hydrate, 10 mins to medicate, meaning about 20 minutes in the tub for a little one is ideal.  This can also work for adults who respond to gentle therapies or cannot tolerate oral dosing.  Also a great treatment for fever or in other cases where dehydration is a concern.
     
  • Sitz baths can be helpful for varicosities in the lower legs and pelvic region.
     
  • Salt water gargle for sore throat (again, herbs could be used, or honey and lemon).
     
  • Nasal lavage using salt water (with or without a neti pot) to clear out sinus congestion, improve headaches, and treats seasonal allergies.

  • A steam inhalation is particularly beneficial for upper respiratory tract infections or sinus congestion.  Boiling water is poured into a bowl and covered with a towel or cloth.  Essential oils can be added to the water to amplify therapeutic value, Eucalyptus being especially helpful.  A steam inhalation of Rosemary can also be used to acutely treat a headache.
